Vini di Ghemme

Ghemme in breve
The hills run north to south on rocks and debris of many kinds under a surface of clay, kaolin and tuff — compact and deep on the plateau, loose and stony on the western slope — and the rules credit their mineral salts with the savour of the grapes. Vineyards lie between 220 and 400 metres.
Ghemme is Nebbiolo, called Spanna here, with up to 15 per cent Vespolina and Uva Rara. It ages at least 34 months from the first of November of the harvest year, 18 of them in wood, and a Riserva 46, with 24 in wood, followed by a spell in bottle. Pliny the Elder already knew its wine, local families spread it through the last century, and it became a DOC in 1969 and a DOCG in 1997.
