Suvereto
2 cantine e 2 vini. This red appellation of the Tuscan coast covers a single commune: Suvereto, on the hills of the Val di Cornia in the province of Livorno, inland from Piombino and south of Bolgheri. Vini di Suvereto
Suvereto in breve
Like its neighbour to the north, Suvereto is Bordeaux-leaning country. The basic wine may be Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in any proportion, and there are varietal versions of each, and of Sangiovese, at 85 per cent or more. Nothing may be sold before the first of June of the second year after the harvest; a Riserva spends at least eighteen months in oak and six in bottle, from vineyards cropped at no more than eight tonnes a hectare instead of nine.
The production rules describe a warm, dry place: an average temperature of about 14 °C and rarely more than 650 mm of rain a year, with a wide swing between day and night that the growers credit for the wines' perfume. The soils are loams, some sandier, some heavier with clay, neutral to slightly alkaline. Vines were grown here under the Etruscans and the Romans, and planting spread again from the seventeenth century.
