Vineyard and terroir
La Chiesa comes from a 0.5 ha vineyard in Castelletto, Monforte d’Alba, at 350 m above sea level with an easterly exposure. The young, shallow, calcareous soil originated from marine sediments of the Serravallian-period Lequio formation around 12 million years ago; it contains silt and clay and is rich in sand. The vines are 50 years old and rank among the estate’s oldest plantings.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand from late September to early October. Fermentation and maceration occur on the skins in rotary fermenters for approximately 6–7 days, with temperature controlled between 25 and 30°C. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques.
Tasting profile
Deep, intense ruby red. The complex, enveloping bouquet features wild berries and red fruit. The palate is fruity, full-bodied, persistent, round and velvety.
Serving and pairing
Pair with meat dishes, game or cheese.
