Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The organically farmed vineyards lie near Orvieto at 300 m. Their predominantly volcanic, sedimentary and clay-rich soils contribute a light mineral character to the wine.
Grapes
Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Ageing
Matured for 12 months in French oak barriques, followed by 12 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Bright ruby red. The compact, intense bouquet shows blackcurrant, black cherry and cocoa. The palate is complex and firm yet balanced and harmonious, with well-judged tannins, warmth and freshness supported by slight minerality.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C with hearty first courses, red meat, game, aged cheeses or cured meats.
Label / history
The name Lavico evokes basalt, the dark volcanic stone that contrasts with the white travertine on Orvieto Cathedral. It also refers to the volcanic origin of the land where Cantina Altarocca’s vineyards grow.
