Vineyard and terroir
The 3-hectare Montefortini–Podere Lombarda cru is situated near the Etruscan tombs of Montefortini and Boschetti. It lies at 100 m above sea level, faces east and has sandstone soil. Plantings date from 1999, 2008 and 2015; newer blocks have 5,000 vines per hectare. The vines are Guyot-trained, and viticulture is certified organic. This is the estate’s earliest-ripening cru. Average wine yield is 40 hl/ha.
Grapes
80% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo Nero, 10% Uva Francesca—the traditional local name used for Cabernet—and 5% other approved red varieties.
Vinification
Temperature-controlled skin maceration employs délestage and pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine page gives a maceration period of 10–15 days, while the technical sheet gives 15–20 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for one year in wood: 50% in French oak tonneaux of 3.5 and 5 hl and 50% in 25-hl Slavonian oak casks.
Technical data
Average production is 12,000 bottles per year in 0.75-L format.
Tasting profile
The cru is associated with an elegant nose and an especially approachable palate.
