Vineyard and terroir
The 80-hectare estate lies among hills, 5 km from the sea. Its vineyards experience hot summers and a constant fresh breeze, which support grape ripening.
Grapes
The proportions of the blend vary with the vintage and the quality of the harvest.
Vinification
For the 2021 vintage, Merlot was picked in early September, Cabernet Franc in mid-September and Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the month. The grapes underwent two selections, before destemming and immediately afterward, so that only fully ripe berries entered the fermentation vats. Individual vineyard parcels were divided into smaller blocks, then harvested and vinified separately. Fermentation and maceration lasted 15–20 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Malolactic fermentation was completed in barriques by the end of the year.
Ageing
In February following the harvest, wines from the best vineyard blocks were chosen for the final blend. The 2021 blend matured in new French oak barriques until July 2023.
Vintage notes
All three varieties achieved exceptional fruit concentration and extract in 2021. The vintage is expected to reach its peak between 2025 and 2041.
Label / history
The estate was inherited by the Antinori family in the 1930s. The name Guado al Tasso means “shy badgers” and refers to animals found around the streams near the estate. The wine has been produced since 1990.
