Vineyard and terroir

The Pisapola vineyard lies in the municipality of Verduno, at 310–370 metres above sea level. Its southwest- and southeast-facing slopes have marly clay and limestone soils. The vines were planted between 1973 and 2005. Matteo Ascheri developed specific growing methods for each stage of the vine’s vegetative cycle, together with his own approach to working the soil.

Grapes

Matteo Ascheri’s approach includes the selection of different clones, informed by his six years leading the Experimental Viticulture Center of the Piedmont region and his contact with its research community.

Vinification

The 2019 grapes were harvested by hand on 14 and 15 October and transported to the winery as quickly as possible. The must fermented for 12 days in stainless-steel tanks at 28 °C. Vinification avoids rotary fermenters, must concentrators, reverse-osmosis filters, micro-oxygenation systems and similar technology.

Ageing

The wine matured for 22 months in oak barrels, of which 50% were new.

Tasting profile

Open and honest in character, with an approachable style.

Vintage notes

The 2019 season began with a long winter, followed by a late spring with rain and low temperatures until mid-March. The growing cycle started late but developed evenly because of substantial moisture reserves in the soil. High temperatures in June accelerated growth and compensated for the slow start. Hot days during summer alternated with rainy, moderately warm weather. Harvest at the Ascheri estate ran from the first half of September into the second half of October. Sharp temperature swings caused a small reduction in yields, balanced by excellent grape quality.

Label / history

The Matteo Ascheri label is reserved for limited quantities of wines from selected vineyards and vintages. After years of investing in vineyards and cellars and developing his own methods, Matteo Ascheri created the collection to reflect both its vineyards and his ideas about wine. The wines are made without an outside consultant.
