Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from Podere di Serralunga d’Alba, at 280–350 metres above sea level. The vines grow on south- and southwest-facing slopes, in plots of marly, silty soils alternating with sandy and calcareous soils. The plots were planted between 1995 and 1997.
Vinification
For the 2019 vintage, the grapes were harvested by hand on 9 October and transported promptly to the winery. Fermentation took place in steel tanks for 15 days at 30 °C. The winery does not use rotary fermenters, must concentrators, reverse-osmosis filters or micro-oxygenation systems.
Ageing
The wine remained in steel tanks for six months, followed by around two years in Slavonian oak barrels, 60% old and 40% new.
Tasting profile
Powerful yet refined.
Vintage notes
In 2019, a prolonged winter was followed by a late spring, with rain and low temperatures through mid-March. Vegetative growth began late but evenly, supported by substantial moisture reserves in the soil. High temperatures in June accelerated development after the slow start. During summer, hot days alternated with rainy, moderately warm conditions. Sharp temperature changes reduced yields slightly, while grape quality remained excellent.
Label / history
The Matteo Ascheri label is reserved for limited-production wines made only in selected vintages and from selected vineyards. Matteo Ascheri previously headed Piedmont’s Experimental Centre for Viticulture for six years, an experience that informed his clone selection, growing methods for each stage of the vine’s vegetative cycle and approach to soil management. Coste & Bricco is not produced every year.
