Vineyard and terroir
Vigna del Nocio has belonged to Poderi Boscarelli since 1988. Located on the eastern side of the estate, it covers approximately four hectares between 280 and 350 metres above sea level. Its alluvial soils differ from the rest of the estate through clearly separated sandy and clay-rich zones.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese Prugnolo Gentile. Since 1991, vineyard selections have taken account of both pedoclimatic conditions and the different Sangiovese clones present. The different soils ripen at different times, allowing several pure-Sangiovese cuvées to be produced.
Vinification
After destemming and gentle crushing, the grapes ferment with indigenous yeasts in oak vats filled to no more than two-thirds of capacity. Fermentation lasts about 10 days at a controlled 27–31°C. Short pump-overs are used during the initial phase, together with manual cap punching. In some cases, maceration continues for another 7–10 days.
Ageing
The individual Nocio cuvées mature separately for 18–24 months in 5–10 hl Slavonian or French oak. At the end of maturation, the final blend is assembled from varying proportions of these site-derived cuvées according to the character of the harvest. Bottle ageing lasts approximately one year before release.
Tasting profile
The wine combines complexity and long ageing capacity with the elegance and fragrance of pure Prugnolo Gentile.
Serving and pairing
Its ageing potential is measured in decades. The recommended optimum drinking period varies by vintage but begins from the fifth year after harvest.
Label / history
The first vintage was 1991. Average annual production is approximately 5,000 bottles.
