Storia
1927 – Foundation
Signor Ferro Maggiore moved from the nearby town of Calosso to San Marzano Oliveto, in the province of Asti, and founded a farm there. In the Piedmontese dialect, the name Carussin means "the home of the farmer from Calosso." He settled in a house with 4 hectares of vineyards, then added a second house with another 2 ha of vines.
1950 – Change of ownership
Ferro was killed in an encounter with a bull, and the farm passed to his son Carlo and his brother Giovanni.
Expansion
Carlo and Giovanni decided to expand the property, replacing the apple orchard with a vineyard planted with Barbera. During this period the total vineyard area reached 13 ha, and it remains the same today.
1962–1984 – Bruna Ferro and Luigi Garberoglio
Bruna Ferro, the founder's granddaughter, was born in 1962 and grew up on the family farm. In 1981 she met Luigi Garberoglio, the son of farmers and winegrowers. He soon joined the Ferro family, bringing his 6 ha of vineyards and his ideas about biodynamics. Since 1984, Carussin has followed biodynamic practices throughout the estate and has been certified by Suolo e Salute.
Today
The estate is now run by Bruna Ferro.
Terroir
The estate is located in San Marzano Oliveto, in the province of Asti, Piedmont. The family describes its vineyards as an "area of minimal human presence."
Vinificazione
Since 1984, Carussin has followed biodynamic practices throughout the estate, certified by Suolo e Salute. The family describes its vineyards as an "area of minimal human presence," reflecting a low-intervention approach.
The low-intervention approach followed in the vineyard continues in the cellar. Wines are aged for a fairly short time in neutral steel, fiberglass, and concrete vessels, with oak barrels used only very rarely. They are bottled without filtration.
Filosofia
The family holds a low-intervention philosophy, describing its vineyards as an "area of minimal human presence." This same approach is applied in the cellar, favoring neutral aging vessels, minimal oak use, and bottling without filtration.
