Vineyard and terroir
Campo Romano was established between 1975 and 1977 at Cascine Drago and planted in 1977 with Pinot Nero vines brought directly from Burgundy. Their arrival followed Tino Colla’s period of work and study in Burgundy, at a time when suitable Pinot Nero planting material was unavailable from Piemonte nurseries.
Grapes
100% Pinot Nero Borgogna.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed. Maceration on the skins lasts 8–10 days at approximately 30°C. Malolactic fermentation is completed before winter.
Ageing
Approximately one year in oak casks.
Technical data
Alcohol is 12.5–13.5% vol. Total acidity is 5–5.5 g/L, and dry extract is 23–25 g/L.
Tasting profile
Delicate garnet red. The fine nose shows griotte cherry, tobacco and spices. Ripe-fruit flavours lead the palate, supported by fresh, rounded tannins that are well integrated into the wine’s body. The aromas have length and persistence, and the wine offers good ageing potential.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 14–16°C in a fairly large glass to reveal its volume. Pair with agnolotti or oven-roasted poultry.
Label / history
The name Campo Romano recalls archaeological remains discovered when the ground was prepared for planting: fragments of Roman bricks, roof tiles and amphorae associated with an ancient settlement. The wine combines the finesse associated with French Pinot Nero with a distinctly Piedmontese structure.
