Vineyard and terroir

Riesling Renano was planted at Cascine Drago in Alba in 1987, following the estate’s positive experience with Pinot Nero. Rhine-origin planting material was chosen to pursue freshness, minerality and the ability to evolve with age. A small river runs along the lower part of the hill.

Grapes

100% Riesling Renano.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand and softly pressed. The must settles for 24 hours at 8–10°C before racking, then undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel at 20–22°C. Malolactic fermentation is avoided.

Ageing

The wine remains on fine lees for several months and undergoes natural chilling during winter. It is bottled in spring and rests in bottle for several months before release.

Technical data

Alcohol: 12–13% vol. Total acidity: 7–8 g/L. Dry extract: 18–20 g/L.

Tasting profile

Straw yellow with greenish reflections. The elegant nose evokes mountain flowers, persistent minerality and a full citrus character. The palate combines bright, savoury acidity with complexity, volume and length. Fresh and citrus-led in its youth, it develops the variety’s more complex aromas while retaining freshness as it ages.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 9–11°C in a tulip-shaped glass. Suitable as an aperitif and with fish appetizers.

Label / history

Ranera takes its name from the frogs heard singing in the evening; the nearby stream makes the lower hillside a favoured habitat. The variety was selected after the estate’s 1985 Pinot Nero experience, drawing on Tino’s work in France and seeking a white wine with the freshness and minerality associated with Riesling as well as the evolutionary capacity of a red.
