Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from vineyards in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo, at 350 metres above sea level. The soils are rich in minerals, with plenty of limestone and clay; they retain moisture and supply the vine roots with trace elements, which gives the wine its distinctive character. The climate is Mediterranean, with cold winters, warm summers and moderate rainfall. The Adriatic Sea lies to the east and the Apennine Mountains protect the area to the west. Marked differences between day and night temperatures, together with air currents from both sea and mountains, create ideal ripening conditions.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of October. They are sorted at the winery, then macerated for more than 10 days in 150 hL stainless steel tanks. Fermentation takes place at a controlled 30 °C, with regular pumping over. Malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
The wine ages for 6–8 months: 30% in oak barrels and 70% in stainless steel tanks.
