Vineyard and terroir

Le Poggiole comes from selected vineyards at the highest elevations of the Fattoria del Cerro estate in Montepulciano. The Sangiovese–Prugnolo Gentile vines are more than 30 years old. Fruit is selected according to quality as well as vineyard exposure and soil type. The estate’s characteristic blue clay is referenced by the blue element on the label.

Grapes

Sangiovese with other traditional grape varieties.

Vinification

Fermentation and maceration take place at a controlled 24–28°C with daily pumping over and délestage. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, post-fermentation maceration continues at 29°C. The wine is then racked and transferred to oak barrels.

Ageing

Maturation comprises 18 months in oak barrels followed by six months in bottle.

Tasting profile

The nose is marked by intense red fruit. The palate is full-bodied, with a long finish that reprises the wine’s fruity aromas.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C in large glasses. Pair with roasted or richly flavoured red meat and mature cheeses.

Label / history

This Riserva represents the history of Fattoria del Cerro: it was the estate’s first Vino Nobile and has been produced since the estate’s inaugural vintage of the denomination. The blue detail on the label pays tribute to the blue clay typical of its Vino Nobile vineyards.
