Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from a 7-hectare site in the commune of San Casciano. The vineyards face south and southwest, on richly textured, well-drained soils.

Grapes

Sangiovese forms the main part of the blend, with smaller amounts of Merlot and Malvasia Nera.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in oak barrels, followed by 2 months in bottle. This softens and rounds its juicy tannins while adding complexity and individuality.

Tasting profile

Sangiovese brings elegance and an easy-drinking character, while Merlot and Malvasia Nera contribute strength and roundness. The tannins are juicy.

Label / history

Fattoria Collazzi has produced I Bastioni since 2002. The estate covers around 400 hectares in the municipality of Impruneta, 7 km from Florence. From 1933 it belonged to the siblings Carlo and Bona Marchi, who concentrated mainly on olive-oil production for many decades and sold their wine in bulk.

In the early 1990s, the Marchi family entrusted the vineyards and winemaking to their maternal relative, Marquis Lamberto Frescobaldi, and his partner, Tuscan oenologist Niccolò d’Afflitto. After studying the estate’s relatively infertile soils and local climate, they focused on Sangiovese and planted new Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot vines. They also undertook a major renovation of the cellars and the estate’s 25 hectares of vineyards. These changes led several years later to the creation of I Bastioni and Collazzi.

During its first ten years, I Bastioni received several major awards at international competitions. The 2004 vintage was named Gold Award Winner at the 2006 Port of Wine Festival NLSC.
