Vineyard and terroir

Ganzerello comes from two small parcels measuring 0.5 ha and 0.25 ha. One lies within the Spescia vineyard around the Gaiospino vines; the other is approximately 1 km away. They sit at 350 m with a north-western exposure on clay mixed with calcareous marl. The parcels were planted in 1975 and 1998.

The soil is not cultivated and spontaneous vegetation is maintained, with manual under-row management. The vines are pruned manually to single and double Guyot. Bunch thinning is performed at veraison in particularly productive years.

Grapes

Sangiovese and Syrah; proportions are not specified. The blend is established at harvest: Sangiovese is picked at full ripeness and Syrah when slightly overripe.

Vinification

The bunches are selected, destemmed and crushed. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel with skin maceration.

Ageing

Ageing takes place in second-use oak barrels to stabilise the wine and polish the tannic structure without allowing new-oak aromas to obscure the fruit.

Technical data

Formats: 750 ml and 1.5 L Magnum. Ageing potential: 10 years.

Tasting profile

Ripe plum leads the aroma, counterpointed by leather, tobacco and spice. The palate is austere yet captivating, with medicinal herbs, sour cherry and white pepper. Its structure is balanced and the tannins are silky.

Serving and pairing

Pairs with cured meats, pasta with ragù, grilled meats and medium-aged cheeses.
