Vineyard and terroir
Bosco draws on selected sections of two hillside parcels in the Manzano hills of Cortona. Together they cover 3.5 hectares at 290–300 metres above sea level. The vineyard table dates the plantings to 1995 and 1997, with 7,500–9,000 vines per hectare trained to cordon spur. The soils are clay and limestone.
Grapes
100% Syrah.
Vinification
Harvest takes place during the first ten days of September. Maceration lasts 30–45 days, and fermentation is conducted in oak with two-thirds whole bunches.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in used oak, divided between 34-hL barrels and barriques, followed by 12–18 months in bottle.
Technical data
Annual production comprises 15,000 standard bottles, 100 magnums and 50 jeroboams. The first vintage was 1992. Toscana IGT.
Tasting profile
An intense, clear and concentrated Syrah with an earthy, complex profile. Ground coffee, cocoa bean and a wooden Tuscan cigar box are joined by fresh mint, red fruit, Mediterranean herbs and flowers.
Vintage notes
The 2018 rating describes blackberry, black olive, light tar, mahogany and a spicy finish, with a full, chewy structure and rounded tannins. The 2016 shows meat, berries, cedar, sage and thyme, firm tannins and a silky finish. The 2015 combines berries, nutmeg and light chocolate with a balanced, firm, medium-bodied palate and fresh finish. The 2014 is brilliant ruby, with blueberry, tobacco and black pepper, dense integrated tannins and a powerful yet juicy structure.
