Vineyard and terroir
Migliara comes from the estate’s homonymous cru, a single 1.2-hectare parcel in the Manzano hills of Cortona at 300 metres above sea level. Planted in 2000, it has 7,500 vines per hectare trained to cordon spur. The soil is clay and limestone; marine fossils contribute to the site’s strongly mineral expression. The estate places this geology within the Val di Chiana, reclaimed at the end of the eighteenth century.
Grapes
100% Syrah.
Vinification
Harvest falls in the second ten-day period of September. The grapes remain on their skins for 30–45 days and ferment in oak with two-thirds whole bunches.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 24 months in used oak, divided between 34-hL barrels and barriques, followed by nine months in bottle.
Technical data
Annual production comprises 2,000 standard bottles, 50 magnums and 20 jeroboams. The first vintage was 2006. Toscana IGT.
Tasting profile
The estate’s richest and most elegant Syrah selection combines river-stone minerality with berries, white truffle and a strand of liquorice.
Vintage notes
The 2017 rating adds sweet tobacco, slate, tea, black fruit and tar to the wine’s liquorice character. It is full-bodied and chewy, with concentrated fruit, structured tannins, energy and verve. The 2016 shows crushed berries, walnut, dried meat and chocolate, supported by ripe fruit and tannins with polished tension. The 2015 is ripe and generous yet elegant, with lively dry tannins and a long, delicate finish.
