Vineyard and terroir

Fontarca comes from the estate’s oldest Viognier vineyard: a single 1.5-hectare parcel planted in 1988 in the Manzano hills of Cortona. It stands at 270 metres above sea level on clay-and-sand soils, with 7,500 vines per hectare trained by cordon spur and Guyot. The wine is certified organic by QCertificazioni.

Grapes

100% Viognier, selected from the estate’s oldest vineyard.

Vinification

Harvest takes place at the end of August. The grapes are pressed directly, then fermented in used wooden vessels comprising 20-hectolitre barrels and barriques.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 18 months in used 20-hectolitre barrels and barriques.

Technical data

Toscana IGT. Annual production comprises approximately 3,500 standard bottles and 50 magnums. The first vintage was 1990.

Tasting profile

An elegant, deep and intense Viognier with substantial ageing potential. Its mineral and savoury profile evokes sea rocks, marine fossils, shells and fleur de sel, alongside medicinal herbs, anise, rosemary and capers from Salina.
