Vineyard and terroir

Rosso is made from younger Syrah vines distributed across eight parcels covering 12 hectares in the Manzano hills of Cortona. The vineyards stand at 290–330 metres above sea level on clay-and-sand soils. They were planted in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2004, at densities of 7,500–9,000 vines per hectare, and are trained by cordon spur. The wine is certified organic by QCertificazioni.

Grapes

100% Syrah.

Vinification

The harvest runs from the end of August through the first ten days of September. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with five days of maceration on the skins.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 15 months, divided between stainless-steel and cement vessels.

Technical data

Toscana IGT. Annual production is approximately 60,000 bottles. The first vintage was 2010, and ageing potential is at least five to six years.

Tasting profile

Deep, lustrous red in colour. The fragrant nose suggests brushwood, blackberry, balsamic elements, spice and liquorice root. Silky tannins lead into a fresh, persistent finish. Although approachable on release, the wine can develop for at least five to six years.
