Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Le Ronche estate in Fossalta di Piave, 10 km from the Adriatic Sea and 50 km from the Dolomite Alps. The vines grow in alluvial soils of white clay and dolomitic rock. Besides regular vineyard care, the winery uses summer pruning and careful leaf thinning to bring the grapes to ideal ripeness. Yields are kept very low, so the grapes develop rich flavour and aroma.
The estate uses only organic methods today. Vines are pruned short, green harvesting is carried out every year, and no irrigation is used. The result is low yields of very high-quality grapes.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in late September and/or early October. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, then macerated and fermented at controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, with frequent pumping over.
Ageing
The wine matures for around 12 months on its fine lees in barriques.
Vintage notes
2020: according to Alessandro De Stefani, ideal weather through the season produced excellent-quality grapes, and the winery believes it will be remembered as one of the best vintages of this century. January and February were very mild with little rain. March brought heavy rain and normal temperatures, and a cool spring extended flowering. Summer was pleasant, without extreme temperature peaks. Hot days and cool nights in August encouraged slow, steady ripening. Yields were about 5% below the average of the previous five years. The year's red wines are well structured, with an appealing tannin profile. The grapes had excellent alcohol levels, a suitable balance of sugar and acidity and a high polyphenol content, making them ideal for barrel ageing.
Label / history
The De Stefani family has long cultivated its vines, and the estate has expanded considerably over the years, with vineyard practices evolving.
