Storia
Development within Terre Miroglio
Edoardo Miroglio Winery was established at Elenovo in Bulgaria's Thracian Valley as one of the three wine properties within the Terre Miroglio group. A founding date is not documented, but wines from Mavrud were already being produced by the 2009 vintage. The estate developed on a property extending across 1,500 hectares, with 150 hectares under vine by 2016 and 16 grape varieties in cultivation. A more recent description places the vineyard surface at 160 hectares.
In 2014, Franco Miroglio invited Giovanni Minetti to collaborate across the three Terre Miroglio wineries. The mandate was to raise product quality and strengthen the international-market positioning of the ranges from Tenuta Carretta, Malgrà and Edoardo Miroglio Winery.
Recognition and international visits in 2016
In 2016, the winery was among the Bulgarian producers recognized at the 23rd Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, whose competition sessions took place in Plovdiv from 29 April to 1 May. Three wines received gold medals: Soli Invicto 2011, Elenovo Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and EM Muscat Ottonel 2015.
During a visit in mid-May 2016, winery director Alberto La Rosa presented the architecture of the property, its vineyards, target markets, wine-tourism activity and the production of still wines, brandies and sparkling wines. The visit included barrel tasting and a presentation of the estate's traditional-method sparkling and organic ranges.
From 6 to 9 June 2016, a group of Italian journalists toured the estate and its vineyards, steel vinification tanks and ageing casks. They observed the disgorgement of EM traditional-method sparkling wine and met owner Edoardo Miroglio. A vertical tasting of Mavrud covered the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 vintages, demonstrating the development of this late-ripening Bulgarian variety across five harvests.
The 2016 harvest was under way at full pace by 21 September and was described by the estate team as particularly good.
Subsequent positioning
By 2018, Edoardo Miroglio Winery was being presented as a Bulgarian specialist in native Thracian varieties. Its traditional-method sparkling wines subsequently became a regular part of Terre Miroglio tastings and events, including Anteprime and the dedicated “Brut ma bon” tasting in 2019, the rosé-focused programme in 2020, and the Soirée en Rosé and Sparkling Cannubi events in 2022. The range represented at these events included Brut, Brut Rosé, Blanc de Blancs and organic Traminer sparkling wines.
Terroir
The estate lies at Elenovo in the Thracian Valley of Bulgaria, approximately 250 km southeast of Sofia. Its property extends across 1,500 hectares, while the most recent vineyard figure is 160 hectares.
The terrain is suited both to internationally established varieties—Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc—and to Bulgarian grapes identified as Mavrud, Rubin and Bucket. Sixteen grape varieties were under cultivation by 2016.
Mavrud is a late-ripening native Bulgarian variety. Fruit tasted across the 2009–2013 vintages displayed the variety's capacity for both strength and nuance. Its berries have thick, resilient skins, sweet and fresh-tasting fruit, substantial pigmentation, soft tannins and healthy acidity.
Vinificazione
The estate cultivates 16 grape varieties across its Elenovo vineyards, combining international cultivars with native Bulgarian material. Mavrud receives particular attention as a late-ripening variety with thick, resistant skins, marked colour, soft tannins and good acidity.
The portfolio included a dedicated organic range by 2016, represented by Viognier & Traminer, Mavrud & Rubin and Rosé Bouquet & Mavrud. This confirms production of organically identified wines but does not establish that the entire vineyard surface follows certified organic farming.
The cellar contains steel tanks for vinification and casks for ageing. Its output encompasses still wines, brandies and traditional-method sparkling wines, and visitors have been offered tastings directly from the casks.
Traditional-method sparkling production includes refermentation in bottle. During the concluding disgorgement stage, the cellar team inspects each bottle before placing its neck in a freezer at −25 °C. The crown cap is then removed on the disgorgement line together with the frozen deposit. The bottle is topped with dosage, or liqueur d’expédition, before final closure with a mushroom-shaped cork secured by a wire cage.
The documented sparkling range comprises Brut, Brut Rosé, Blanc de Blancs, Brut Zero and organic Traminer. The cellar also works with red wines capable of extended development, illustrated by the comparative tasting of five Mavrud vintages from 2009 through 2013.
Filosofia
The estate's identity combines international varieties with a deliberate emphasis on native Bulgarian grapes, particularly Mavrud and Rubin. By 2018 it was positioned specifically as a specialist in indigenous Thracian varieties.
The winemaking approach also combines established cellar technology—steel vinification and cask ageing—with traditional bottle-fermented sparkling-wine production. The organic range was presented as a point of particular pride, although an estate-wide farming commitment was not defined.
From 2014, the wider management objective was to improve both product quality and the international-market position of the wines. Later descriptions portray the Elenovo project as having changed perceptions of Bulgarian winemaking, especially through its lively traditional-method sparkling wines and renewed attention to local varieties.
