Vineyard and terroir

All the grape varieties are grown in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini subregion, at 110 metres above sea level, on limestone and clay soils with chalk deposits. The soils give the wine structure, freshness and mineral notes. Yields are kept to no more than 35 metric centners per hectare to concentrate flavour and aroma. The estate lies in Signa, a western suburb of Florence several dozen kilometres from the city centre. Signa has a warm microclimate and some of the most favourable conditions in Tuscany.

Enrico Fossi owns 12 hectares of vineyards at around 80 metres above sea level, on limestone soils with thin layers of chalk. The vines average 10 years of age.

Grapes

The blend is described as unusual and even daring. It combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Syrah, Pinot Nero, Gamay and Sangiovese Grosso. No proportions are given.

Vinification

The grapes are vinified with care after harvest. The text gives no further detail.

Ageing

The wine ages for 12 months in small oak barrels, which add depth and roundness.

Tasting profile

Expressive, with a delicate, layered aroma, an expressive palate and a vibrant character. The taste is rich and complex. Structure, freshness and mineral notes come from the soils.

Serving and pairing

The text suggests winter celebrations, shared with close friends or family.

Label / history

"Vento" is named for a free, lively and unpredictable spirit, like the wind over the Tuscan hills. Fossi names each wine himself and designs an individual label for it, with sayings, quotations and aphorisms that reflect the wine's story and character.

Enrico Fossi comes from a wealthy family of knitwear factory owners and inherited a large plot of land in Signa. He travelled widely and visited major wine estates before deciding his own land was an excellent place to make wine. He moved away from the area's centuries-old customs and works mainly with international grape varieties. The winery produces 30,000–50,000 bottles a year, varying with the weather and the harvest from each vineyard.
