Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Soccorso is a cru sourced exclusively from the vineyard belonging to the historic Podere Soccorso estate unit. Its loose, silty-sandy soil contains rocky material associated with volcanic rocks and arenites, including locally named “tischi.” Large magmatic and sedimentary rocks occur beneath the loose surface layer. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare. In 2020, the bush-trained vines were 21 years old and yielded 65 quintals per hectare (6.5 t/ha); harvesting was manual.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The hand-harvested fruit underwent a prolonged 30-day fermentation in 50 hl oak vats. Fermentation was spontaneous and free-running, without temperature control, using indigenous, non-selected yeasts. Extraction involved manual pump-overs, and sulphite additions were moderate.
Ageing
The wine matured for 48 months in large Slavonian oak barrels of 10, 40 and 50 hl, followed by six months in bottle before release.
Technical data
Vintage 2020. Alcohol: 14.5%. Total acidity: 5.88 g/L. Total dry extract: 32.9 g/L. Total sulphites: 115 mg/L. Production: 864 bottles of 750 ml.
Tasting profile
The 2020 Riserva combines an alluring, brilliant and succulent character. It is attractive and intriguing, bold and generous while retaining elegance. Power is balanced by freshness, liveliness and vitality. An energetic tension between juiciness and intact fruit is framed by agile, well-defined tannins. The wine shows promising capacity to evolve gracefully and decisively.
Vintage notes
Riserva Vigna Soccorso is made only in the best vintages, when balanced climatic conditions, pronounced temperature variation and exceptional grape quality permit additional cellar ageing and greater complexity and harmony.
Label / history
The ancient, noble history of Podere Soccorso inspired a revival of the historic label design and traditional local winemaking methods that had already received recognition in Italy and abroad more than 150 years ago. The wine pays tribute to Brunello’s history and to Montalcino’s tradition of producing elegant, long-lived wines with a marked territorial identity.
