Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Tre Querci, also called “Monica’s Vineyard,” lies in northern Montalcino beside the older Vigna Poggio Cerrino. Three old oak trees stand above the site. The vineyard was planted in 2017 on soils that change within a few steps and contain a comparatively substantial limestone component. The four-year-old vines of the inaugural 2021 vintage are trained to spurred cordon. Yield was 60 quintals per hectare (6,000 kg/ha), and the fruit was harvested by hand.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
The wine underwent a slow, prolonged 35-day fermentation in unlined concrete and stainless-steel vats. Fermentation was spontaneous, relied on indigenous non-selected yeasts, and proceeded without temperature control. No selected yeasts were added, and pump-overs were performed manually. Sulfite use is described as moderate.
Ageing
Ageing comprised 30 months in large, previously used Slavonian oak casks ranging from 10 to 40 hl, 17 months in 20 hl unlined concrete tanks, and four months in bottle before release.
Technical data
The 2021 contains 15% alcohol, with total acidity of 6.6 g/L, total dry extract of 31.7 g/L, and total sulfites of 100 mg/L. Production amounted to 2,666 bottles of 750 ml.
Tasting profile
The use of concrete emphasizes a particularly pure and lively expression of Sangiovese. The aromatic profile combines violet, hyacinth and wisteria with blackberry, blackcurrant, pomegranate, blood orange and hibiscus. Iron, cinchona, licorice and mint add balsamic nuances, joined by a flinty mineral note. The palate is notably fresh, recalling a sea breeze, while pronounced salinity provides its defining character and elegance.
Vintage notes
The 2021 is the first vintage produced.
Label / history
The name Tre Querci—“Three Oaks”—refers both to the three old oak trees above the vineyard and to Cerrino, linked to the Latin name Quercus cerris. Although it adjoins Poggio Cerrino, the parcel is distinguished by its particular soil profile. The label revives Tiezzi’s first label from the 1980s, with slight graphic adjustments, as a reminder of the estate’s past and present identity.
