Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Soccorso is a cru made exclusively from the vineyard of the homonymous Podere Soccorso. The loose soil combines silt and sand with stony material derived from sedimentary rocks and arenites, including locally termed “tischi.” Large magmatic and sedimentary rocks occur beneath the loose surface layer. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare. For the 2020 vintage, the alberello-trained vines were 21 years old and yielded 65 quintals per hectare (6.5 t/ha); the grapes were harvested by hand.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Spontaneous fermentation lasted 30 days in 50 hl oak vats. It was conducted without temperature control using indigenous, non-selected yeasts, with manual pump-overs and a moderate addition of sulphites.

Ageing

The wine matured for 45 months in large Slavonian oak barrels of 40–50 hl, followed by four months in bottle before release.

Technical data

The 2020 has 14.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.75 g/L, total dry extract of 32.6 g/L and total sulphites of 109 mg/L. Production comprised 6,700 bottles of 750 ml and 150 magnums of 1.5 L.

Serving and pairing

The bottle need only be opened a few minutes before drinking. A little wine can first be poured into a balloon-shaped glass to season it; a modest serving should then be aerated gradually by swirling. There is no need to hurry: this is conceived as a meditation wine that can accompany food or be enjoyed on its own. Serve at no more than 18°C.

Label / history

The ancient, noble origins of Podere Soccorso inspired a revival of the historical label design and a winemaking approach rooted in local tradition. These traditions had already earned recognition in Italy and abroad more than 150 years ago, while the modern interpretation remains oriented toward the future.
