Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Poggio Cerrino is a single vineyard in the Canalicchio area, northeast of Montalcino. Its predominantly clayey soils contain abundant limestone and stony material, calcium agglomerates and fossils, together with sandier sections marked by marl schist and alberese stones. Planting density is 3,000–3,500 vines per hectare.

For the 2021 vintage, the vines averaged 53 years of age. They were field-grafted and trained on a bilateral cordon with spur pruning. The hand-harvested yield was 45 quintals per hectare, equivalent to 4.5 tonnes per hectare.

Vinification

Fermentation extended over 30 days in 50 hl oak vats. It proceeded spontaneously without temperature control, using indigenous, non-selected yeasts. Extraction was managed through manual punch-downs, and sulphite use was moderate.

Ageing

The wine matured for 45 months in oak barrels of 10, 40 and 50 hl, followed by at least four months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2021 has 15% alcohol, total acidity of 6.07 g/L, total dry extract of 33.2 g/L and total sulphites of 106 mg/L. Production comprised 6,840 bottles of 750 ml.

Tasting profile

The 2021 is presented as the product of a great vintage. It shares the elegance, finesse and balance of the 2019, while showing a more vibrant and lively character, greater freshness and more pronounced acidity. These qualities give it a particularly distinct personality.

Vintage notes

Compared with the more celebrated 2019, the 2021 is described as fresher, more energetic and more acid-driven, while retaining comparable elegance, finesse and balance.

Label / history

Poggio Cerrino has a special connection with Enzo Tiezzi: it was the vineyard from which he made his first Brunello in 1980. The vineyard became the family’s first owned site in the mid-1980s. Its story is associated with personal and territorial growth, social advancement, optimism, enterprise and the pursuit of a better future. Beginning with the 2017 vintage, Vigna Poggio Cerrino became the estate’s second single-vineyard cru alongside Vigna Soccorso.
