Vineyard and terroir
Since the 2022 vintage, this Rosso di Montalcino has been made as a single-vineyard cru from Vigna Poggio Cerrino in the Canalicchio area northeast of Montalcino. Cerrino lies approximately 3 km northeast of Montalcino at about 350 m above sea level. Its medium-textured soils contain abundant limestone and stony material, calcium agglomerates and fossils, with galestro and alberese in places. Planting density is 3,000–3,500 vines per hectare. The vines vary in age and average approximately 50 years; they are organically farmed and partly grafted in the vineyard. The estate’s Cerrino vineyards are spur-cordon trained.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. The 2024 yield was 35 quintals per hectare, and the grapes were harvested by hand.
Vinification
Fermentation was prolonged for an average of 30 days in 50 hl oak vats. It proceeded spontaneously without temperature control, using indigenous, non-selected yeasts. Pump-overs were performed manually, and sulfiting was modest.
Ageing
The wine matured for 11 months in 10, 40 and 50 hl Slavonian oak casks, followed by one month in bottle. It is released approximately 12 months after harvest.
Technical data
Vintage 2024. Alcohol: 13%. Total acidity: 5.96 g/L. Total dry extract: 39.1 g/L. Total sulfites: 88 mg/L. Production comprised 5,100 bottles of 750 ml. Organic wine.
Tasting profile
A direct, uncompromising expression of young Sangiovese di Montalcino, with varietally characteristic aromas and flavors.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18 °C. Pair with homemade pinci, pappardelle or ravioli with hare or wild-boar ragù, pecorino fondue with crisp rigatino, celery stewed with duck, ossobuco alla senese, or stewed meat and vegetable balls.
Label / history
Rosso di Montalcino has a strong historical and emotional association with Enzo Tiezzi, who promoted the category while serving as president of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino and worked toward its DOC recognition. This traditionally styled Rosso uses the same grapes and vinification approach as Brunello but undergoes a shorter maturation in the same type of large Slavonian oak casks.
