Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern side of Etna, at 580 m. The vineyard is worked by hand using natural products. Most of the vines are more than 100 years old; a small portion was replanted in 2005.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand in the middle ten days of October. After destemming and pressing, 30% of the crop is vinified with the stems. The skins macerate in a 2,500 L wooden vat for at least 15 days, followed by a ten-day fermentation with native yeasts. The wine settles naturally, and bottling is timed to the lunar calendar. It is filtered only at bottling, with very small additions of sulfur.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least 12 months in 225 and 500 L barrels.
Tasting profile
Elegant and notably complex, with a natural character.
Label / history
The name “Vinupetra” means “wine made in a field full of stones” in Sicilian dialect. The wine is bottled in a custom glass bottle bearing the company logo: a century-old grapevine derived from a symbol dating to 1435, when the historic Etna winegrowers’ association “Maestranza dei Vigneri” was first founded in Catania.
