Vineyard and terroir

The Lagrein fruit comes from the Berger Gai vineyard near Gries. The vines average 50 years of age and grow in alluvial soils.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested in early October. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats over three weeks.

Ageing

Malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barriques and large oak casks, followed by 12 months of ageing in the same types of vessel.

Label / history

The name “Berger Gei” derives from the Berger Gai vineyard. The vineyard belongs to the parents of Ignaz Niedrist’s wife, which accounts for the wine’s separate label and brand name. The wine is made in limited quantities.

The Niedrist winery was officially established in 1870. Ignaz Niedrist inherited the family vineyards and began bottling and selling wine in 1989. The estate produces 25,000–30,000 bottles annually.
