Vineyard and terroir
The vines are 25–43 years old and grow at 400 metres above sea level, with southern and south-western exposures. The soils comprise marl slate, sandstone and limestone.
Vinification
The bunches were harvested by hand in late September, earlier than usual. A strict selection was made to prevent mould during the long drying period. The grapes were hung from wooden supports or laid on reed mats known locally as “cannicci”, then kept for around three months in a dry, well-ventilated space until they reached at least 35 °Brix. After gentle pressing, the grapes fermented slowly. The resulting yield was 12–15% of their original volume.
Ageing
The wine aged for 11 years in sealed small “caratelli” of various sizes and wood types, with the fermentation starter inside. It was bottled without filtration.
Tasting profile
Rich sweetness is balanced by vivid freshness. The wine has depth, complexity and nectar-like concentration.
Vintage notes
The 2011 season began with a warm, rainy late winter, followed by a mild, wet spring. These conditions established water reserves that sustained the vineyards through the hot, dry summer. The winery regarded the vintage as technically challenging.
