Vineyard and terroir
The wine originates in Gallina, in the municipality of Neive, Cuneo. This south-facing vineyard covers 13.5 acres at 250 m a.s.l. The vines average 55 years of age and grow in calcareous marl strongly marked by light-coloured sand. Gallina is planted to Nebbiolo for Barbaresco alongside Barbera.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
Maceration and alcoholic fermentation proceed in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, comprising 20% new oak with the balance in second-use barrels.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least nine months in the same combination of French oak barrels, then undergoes further refinement in bottle.
Technical data
Average production is 6,500 bottles. The inaugural vintage was 1995.
Tasting profile
A soft, persuasive and balanced Barbaresco with velvety tannins and substantial body. The finish is fruity, accompanied by a floral note.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–17 °C in a Burgundy glass.
