Vineyard and terroir

Garretti is located in Grinzane Cavour (CN). The 11-acre vineyard faces south at 240 m a.s.l.; its vines average 70 years of age. The soils are alluvial and have a calcareous-clayey mantle.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

The general method combines maceration and alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in used, second-passage French oak barrels.

For the 2017 vintage, maceration and alcoholic fermentation lasted approximately ten days in temperature-controlled vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in used French oak.

Ageing

The general profile specifies at least 18 months in second-passage French oak and subsequent bottle refinement. The 2017 vintage spent 22 months in used French oak and approximately six months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2017 vintage has 14.5% alcohol and total acidity of 5.2 g/L. Available formats were 375 ml, 750 ml and Magnum. Average production is 11,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Sweet, rich aromas combine ripe fruit and spice. The palate is sophisticated, powerful and full-bodied but remains harmonious and balanced, with generous flavour and complex, plush tannins.

The 2017 vintage is ruby red. Its bouquet features ripe red fruit, candied orange and gillyflower. Structure and freshness meet on the palate alongside spice and menthol, with pronounced, powerful tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–17 °C in a Burgundy glass.

Vintage notes

The 2017 sheet records a shorter maceration than the general profile—approximately ten rather than 14–15 days—and 22 months in used French oak rather than the general minimum of 18 months.
