Vineyard and terroir
The Barbera comes from Gallina in the municipality of Neive, Cuneo. The south-facing vineyard lies at 250 m a.s.l. and covers 13.5 acres. Its vines average 55 years of age, growing in calcareous marl distinguished by a pronounced component of light-coloured sand. Gallina is planted to Barbera as well as Nebbiolo destined for Barbaresco.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
Maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in second- and third-use French oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine remains in those used French oak barrels for at least four months, followed by a minimum of six months in bottle.
Technical data
Average production is 7,500 bottles. The first vintage was 1996.
Tasting profile
Floral and balsamic aromas are abundant. The palate combines gentle acidity with an unexpected tannic texture, creating a silky, elegant and persuasive expression.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–17 °C in a Bordeaux glass.
