Vineyard and terroir

This is a prime selection from the estate’s best Sangiovese vineyards and is produced only in the finest years and in small quantities. The vineyards lie on a southeast-facing hillside at 450 metres above sea level in Panzano in Chianti. The soil is composed of limestone, sand, volcanic stone, schist, and clay. Farming is certified organic, and the vines are trained to cordone speronato. The 2016 sheet records 8.7 hectares of vineyards overall, including 5.87 hectares classified as DOCG.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

For the 2016 vintage, Sangiovese was harvested on 24–28 September. Slow fermentation took place at 28–29°C with daily pump-overs. Pressing followed at the end of October, after which the wine completed malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The 2016 technical sheet specifies 24 months in 225-litre French-oak barriques and 400- to 500-litre tonneaux, followed by 12 months in bottle. The general description instead gives 24–26 months in 400- to 500-litre French-oak tonneaux and a further nine months in bottle.

Technical data

The 2016 vintage has 15% alcohol and 6.1 g/L total acidity. Production comprised 5,800 bottles of 750 ml, 69 Magnums of 1.5 L, 30 bottles of 3 L, and five bottles of 5 L.

Tasting profile

Elegant, succulent, and vibrant, it is conceived as a concentrated expression of Sangiovese and its estate terroir. The 2016 vintage combines a complex bouquet with smooth, elegant tannins and pronounced cherry notes.

Pair with a substantial steak or cheese.

Vintage notes

The 2016 season opened with a very mild winter and warm spring. May and June were wet and cold, followed by a long, warm summer with favourable differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures during ripening. Harvest began in excellent conditions toward the end of September.
