Vineyard and terroir

Baudana MGA lies on the western slope of Serralunga d’Alba, immediately north of Parafada and Lazzarito. Its unusual geology combines Formazioni di Lequio with Sant’Agata fossil marls, bringing together Serravallian and Tortonian formations in one site. The marls show a distinctive bluish tone. Once celebrated and later overlooked, Baudana is now regarded as one of the notable Barolo crus, associated with structure and longevity.

The vines have been managed under the Vajra organic protocol since 2009. Vineyard work also includes monitoring and improving biodiversity across the vines, surrounding fields and woodland. The estate is certified organic and sustainable.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

For the 2021 vintage, the fruit was picked on 14 October. A delicate fermentation in open-top tini preceded 54 days of submerged-cap maceration. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation unfolded during the following spring.

Ageing

The 2021 wine matured for 23 months in custom-made Slavonian oak casks holding 15, 17 and 25 hL. It was bottled on 25 June 2024.

Technical data

The wine is packaged in 750 ml bottles under cork.

Tasting profile

The 2021 has a ruby-red hue. Pomegranate, orange peel, fresh blueberry, leather and herbs shape the nose. Fine-grained, precisely defined tannins lead into a long, persistent finish marked by eucalyptus, blueberry and sweet liquorice.

Vintage notes

The 2021 season was moderately dry and culminated in a late harvest. Spring frost risk and several violent summer hailstorms punctuated an otherwise positive growing season. The grapes retained abundant acidity and achieved good phenolic maturity; low nitrogen levels in the fruit supported particularly long, gentle fermentations.
