Vineyard and terroir
This Barolo unites three Serralunga d’Alba vineyards: Baudana, Cerretta and a small parcel in Costabella. The vines average 20–30 years old and grow at an average elevation of 340 m.
Baudana and Costabella occupy Serralunga’s western slope, at the meeting point of the Tortonian and Serravallian plateaux. Cerretta lies on the opposite, south-east-facing slope, over ancient Formazioni di Lequio marked by a deep red-clay vein. The differing soil structures give the blend a broad view of Serralunga’s terroir.
The vineyards have been farmed under the Vajra organic protocol since 2009. Biodiversity work extends into the surrounding fields and forests, and the estate is certified organic and sustainable.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo from Baudana, Cerretta and a small Costabella parcel.
Vinification
The 2021 fruit was harvested on 13 and 14 October. Vinification took place in vertical tini, using gentle punch-downs and rinsing of the cap. Maceration averaged 45 days and included a partially submerged cap. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred during the following spring.
Ageing
The wine matured for 26 months, primarily in 15, 17 and 25 hL Slavonian oak casks, with a small portion in neutral barrels. It was bottled on 28 June 2024.
Technical data
The wine is packaged in 750 ml bottles under cork.
Tasting profile
The 2021 opens with a multifaceted nose of rose petals, blackcurrant, plum, fresh dates, balsamic nuances and sweet spices. Leather, tobacco, white pepper, dark cherry, mint and black tea emerge across the palate and its notably long, elegant finish.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season was moderately dry and culminated in a late harvest. Spring frost risk and several violent summer hailstorms occurred during an otherwise positive growing cycle. The grapes retained abundant acidity and achieved good phenolic maturity. Low nitrogen levels in the fruit contributed to unusually long and gentle fermentations.
