Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie within the municipalities of Luni, Castelnuovo Magra, Sarzana and Beverino. Albarola forms very compact bunches and is suited to cool hillside environments with good exposure and ventilation, conditions that help reduce humidity. Years of vineyard and cellar research were devoted to identifying appropriate sites and vinification methods for a varietal expression.
Grapes
Albarola. The variety has medium-small, cylindrical, winged and compact bunches, with oval, medium-small berries. Its former local name, “calcatella,” probably refers to the grapes' tightly pressed appearance.
Vinification
Approximately eight hours of cold skin maceration precede fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperature. Historically Albarola was mainly used in blends, contributing freshness, harmony and ease of drinking; its compact bunches made varietal vinification uncommon.
Ageing
Approximately five months on fine lees in stainless steel.
Technical data
Colli di Luni DOC Albarola. Alcohol: 13% vol.
Tasting profile
Pale yellow with green reflections. The layered aromatic profile begins with green and tropical notes of pineapple and lime peel, followed by balsamic herbs and white flowers. On the palate, acidity is supported by the roundness developed during lees contact. The finish has medium length and persistence, with lime-zest sensations enhancing the aftertaste.
Label / history
The wine emerged from a programme of safeguarding, researching and enhancing local grape varieties. It was created as a pure Albarola after extended work in vineyard and cellar to demonstrate the variety's qualitative potential.
