Vineyard and terroir

The fruit is grown on Tuscan soil in Bolgheri, where the Le Macchiole estate lies about 5 km from the sea. Since 2021, half of the grapes have come from new hillside vineyards.

Vinification

Fermentation and maceration last 20 days in concrete tanks and clay amphorae.

Ageing

The wine matures for 14 months in French oak barrels and clay amphorae.

Tasting profile

The use of concrete, amphorae and oak preserves lively, expressive fruit. Grapes from the hillside vineyards bring elegance and finesse, with a character that recalls Pinot Noir.

Label / history

“Scrio” means “pure,” “sincere” and “whole” in Tuscan. Produced since 1994, it originated in Cinzia Merli’s ambition to make a Syrah that was distinctly Mediterranean and Tuscan rather than French or Californian. Merli is the wife of Le Macchiole’s founder. The wine is made in very small quantities.
