Storia
Mid-19th century
The Marotti family business dates to the mid-19th century, when the family bought land in the medieval village of Sant'Amico, in the municipality of Morro d'Alba. Soon after the purchase they built an estate at the heart of the property.
1886
A local newspaper reported on the first vineyard, with 8,000 vines planted 1.2 metres apart. At the time, farmland previously used for crops such as wheat was increasingly being turned into vineyards because the area was well suited to growing grapes.
1985
Lacrima vineyards were granted DOC status to help prevent the variety from disappearing; it was then grown on just 7 hectares.
1991 onwards
Giovanni Marotti Campi took over the family business in 1991 and transformed the winery. New vineyards were planted, bringing the total vineyard area to 52 hectares.
1999
A new winery was built to reflect the winemaking vision shared by Giovanni, his wife Francesca and their son Lorenzo. Since 1999 the estate has also made IGT wines from small amounts of other varieties, including Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Terroir
The estate lies around the medieval village of Sant'Amico in the municipality of Morro d'Alba, in the Marche. It covers 120 hectares, including 52 hectares of vineyards on hillsides at 180 metres above sea level. Soils are mixed but mainly clay. The area was considered particularly well suited to growing grapes.
Castelli di Jesi covers 14 villages set among the hills of the Jesi Valley.
Vinificazione
Red varieties are trained with the "Cordon spur" system, white varieties with the "Gouyot" method. Lacrima has not been developed through artificial cultivation, so it is challenging to work with and needs close attention and careful control throughout grape growing. Its very thin skins split as the grapes ripen.
A new winery was built in 1999 to reflect the family's winemaking vision and to provide excellent conditions for making wine. Lacrima needs careful control in the production of its delicate wine. Since 1999 the estate has also made IGT wines from small amounts of Montepulciano, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Filosofia
The Marotti family describes the estate as a family business where everyone approaches their work with care and professionalism, in the vineyard, at the winery or in wine sales. For them, every bottle represents Italy, their passion for winemaking and their commitment to their craft. The winery pays particular attention to Lacrima.
