Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is selected from family crus in three characteristic Taurasi DOCG subzones. Montemarano and Castelfranci lie at 600 m and have clay-limestone soils. Paternopoli, at 540 m, has a medium-textured soil with a balanced mixture of clay, silt and sand. The vines average 20 years of age, with an average planting density of 5,000 vines/ha and yields of approximately 60 q/ha or 1.2 kg/vine.
Grapes
100% Aglianico.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually from late October through the first ten days of November. A brief 7–8-day maceration at 18–20°C moderates the extraction of phenolic components.
Ageing
Maturation takes place in approximately 50 hl Slavonian oak casks and used French oak barriques, followed by extended bottle ageing. Published durations differ: the product page gives approximately 24 months in oak and at least 30 months in bottle, while the current English brochure gives approximately 30 months in oak and approximately 48 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Pale ruby with delicate reflections and luminous transparency. The complex bouquet combines fruit and flowers with spice, including cherry, plum, blackberry, caramel, tobacco, vanilla, leather and clove. The palate is fresh, savoury and agile, with a silky tannic texture in balance with the other components. Austere and complex, yet notably drinkable.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with savoury broths, miso soup or pan-seared tuna; pasta and other first courses with mushrooms, Jerusalem artichokes, porcini or truffles; roast duck, cold cuts, game or herb-seasoned lamb. Cellaring potential is 50 years or more.
Label / history
Conceived as a modern interpretation of the great Taurasi wines of the 1950s and 1960s, the wine brings together distinct but complementary sites in Montemarano, Castelfranci and Paternopoli. It has carried the Riserva designation since the 2016 vintage, reflecting its extended maturation under the Taurasi DOCG production rules.
