Vineyard and terroir
The Pinot Grigio grows in the heart of the Magredi, in Friuli Grave. The soils are complex and dry, alluvial deposits carried down from the mountains by powerful streams and laid down at their base. Characteristic gravel lies over free-draining sedimentary layers, which encourages slow, even ripening and lets sugars and flavour compounds build gradually. The stony topsoil reflects sunlight by day and keeps the ground cool at night. This daily temperature range supports balanced ripening and gives grapes of marked aromatic complexity and texture. Yields were extremely low, which limited the number of bottles and gave greater aromatic intensity and phenolic richness.
Vinification
The wine is skin-fermented. The maceration resembles that used for red wine, to extract all the natural elements that define the wine. Skin contact is extended, and fermentation is spontaneous with natural yeasts only. The oenologist is Gianpietro Poveljan.
Ageing
Six months on the lees. The concentration of the wine should help it develop in the bottle.
Tasting profile
Aromatic depth and complexity, with a wide range of flavours. Structure and intensity are very different from those of the "Terre Magre" Pinot Grigio, Friuli DOC.
Label / history
L'Altro joined the "Terre Magre" collection in 2022 and is the first skin-fermented wine in the range. "Terre Magre" is a collection of wines from Friuli Grave and the Magredi. Production is limited.
