Vineyard and terroir
N°1 - Numero Uno is made from Nebbiolo vines at least 70 years old. The Guyot-trained vineyards stand at an average altitude of 650 metres on sandy, silty soils. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare, while yield is approximately 6,500 kg per hectare. The must-to-fruit ratio is about 50%.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo. The grapes are picked and selected by hand, then dried for three months.
Vinification
Vinification includes three days of cold maceration followed by 12 days on the skins.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in new French oak barriques. Its style was conceived as a modern interpretation of Sforzato di Valtellina shaped by extended contact with French oak.
Technical data
Approximately 17.0% alcohol by volume, 40 g/l dry extract, 5.8 g/l total acidity and less than 1 g/l total sugar. Approximate production is 5,000 bottles. Technical figures may vary with the vintage.
Tasting profile
Fine and complex on the nose, with spice, pepper, black-fruit preserve and vegetal accents. Ethereal and balsamic nuances mingle with violet and plum compote, followed by liquorice, cloves, cinnamon and woody traces. The palate is broad and complex, showing chocolate, vanilla, roasted notes and overripe fruit. Elegant tannins frame a concentrated yet balanced structure, leading to a juicy, deep overall impression.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 20–22 °C with fine red meats, particularly saddle of roe deer. The wine page presents 75 cl, 150 cl and 300 cl formats. Stated cellaring potential is 25 years.
Label / history
The name Numero Uno reflects the wine's intended position as a leading expression of dried Nebbiolo and of its Valtellina origins.
