Vineyard and terroir

CASASILIA comes from the Sangiovese parcel surrounding the cellar and house and represents a selection of the finest fruit from the estate’s oldest vines. It is the flagship of Poggio al Sole and is certified organic.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Selection proceeds in three stages. The source parcel is selected first. Shortly before harvest, each vine is reduced to its healthiest cluster, which remains on the plant for another 5–10 days. After the manual harvest at the beginning of October, every grape is inspected by hand at the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by maceration lasting more than 20 days to develop aroma, color and structure.

Ageing

The wine matures for 18 months in first- and second-fill barriques. The family tastes every barrel after 12 months, and only the strongest lots retain the CASASILIA designation. Bottling takes place in April.

Technical data

The 2022 current vintage has 14.5% alcohol. Production is limited to 8,000 bottles, and the wine is certified organic.

Tasting profile

A deep, expansive fruit profile is joined by blackberry, forest-floor and fine Havana-tobacco aromas. The palate combines intensity with polished, mature elegance and refined structure, ending in an exceptionally long finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with red meat, particularly Bistecca alla Fiorentina or venison, and with powerful, mature savory cheeses. The 2022 vintage may be enjoyed now through 2031.

Label / history

The name CASASILIA derives from the estate’s medieval title. As a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, it is made entirely from estate-grown grapes and occupies the highest quality tier of the denomination.
