Vineyard and terroir
Riserva is made only when selected plots show exceptional energy, concentration, firm acidity and structured tannins. The parcels are chosen for structure and ageing capacity rather than for adherence to one fixed site. Although the selection may in practice come predominantly from a single vineyard, the vintage remains the defining principle.
For 2019, the fruit came from a south-facing plateau at 500 m with gravel and abundant stones, together with other south-facing parcels. The vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot.
Organic and sustainable viticulture includes need-based green manuring and cover cropping to balance nutrients, increase porosity and limit erosion. Pruning is adapted to vine age, soil, vigour and exposure. Copper, sulphur and natural antagonists are used to manage pathogens, while natural manure and plant fortifiers support soil vitality and vine defences.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. The 2019 grapes were hand-picked on 14 and 15 October, with an average yield of 50 q/ha.
Vinification
The grapes underwent quality sorting before a 10-day fermentation in concrete tulip tanks. Maceration continued for another 18 days.
Ageing
The wine matured for 30 months in 25-hl French oak barrels, then rested for 6 months in natural concrete vats before bottling. The 2019 was bottled unfiltered in December 2023.
Technical data
Production of the 2019 vintage comprised 6,400 standard bottles, 1,200 magnums and 100 double magnums.
Tasting profile
Riserva is a deeper, more austere expression of Brunello. Its concentration, firm acidity and structured tannins make it slower to open and suited to extended development over decades.
Vintage notes
A cold winter and cooler-than-average spring delayed sprouting in 2019. Abundant growing-season rainfall helped the vines achieve balance, supporting polyphenol accumulation and full ripeness. Strong temperature shifts in September and October further improved maturation.
