Vineyard and terroir

Vigna I Poggi is a 2.5-hectare single vineyard and one of the estate’s highest, most distinctive sites. It lies at 550–570 m on wind-swept, west-facing slopes and is divided into three soil units. The upper section has poor, freely draining soils rich in galestro, limiting vine vigour and concentrating the fruit. Calcareous marl and clay in the central section contribute balance and tannic structure, while deeper, more fertile colluvial soils in the lower section encourage stronger vegetative growth. The vines are trained to spurred cordon.

Organic, sustainable farming is tailored to the relationship between vine, soil and microclimate. Pruning aims to limit stress and support vine longevity, while individual soil units receive targeted management without synthetic products.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese. The 2021 fruit was hand-picked on 23 and 27 September, with an average yield of 50 q/ha.

Vinification

After careful selection and destemming, intact berries were vinified for 28 days in 60-hl concrete tulip tanks at temperatures below 25°C. Extraction was gentle, beginning with punch-downs and continuing with delicate pump-overs.

Ageing

The wine matured for 30 months in 25-hl Austrian oak barrels. After blending, it rested for another 6 months in natural concrete vats. The 2021 was bottled unfiltered in April 2025.

Technical data

The 2021 production comprised 10,544 standard bottles, 1,200 magnums and 120 double magnums.

Tasting profile

The style emphasizes finesse rather than power, expressing the vineyard with clarity and vertical precision. Aromatic definition, depth and structure are present without excess.

Vintage notes

A cold winter and spring delayed budbreak in 2021. Abundant rain during the growing season helped the vines reach balance and supported polyphenol accumulation and complete ripening. Strong diurnal temperature variation in September and October enhanced phenolic expression.
