Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards used for the 2023 Rosso lie at 480–520 m on deep, clay-rich soils with good water-holding capacity. The vines are trained to spurred cordon and Guyot.

Organic and sustainable farming employs green manure and cover crops as required to balance nutrients, improve porosity and reduce erosion. Pruning is adjusted to vine age, soil, vigour and exposure. Copper, sulphur and natural antagonists manage pathogens, while natural manure and plant fortifiers support soil vitality and the vines’ natural defences.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese. The 2023 fruit was hand-picked between 30 September and 5 October, with an average yield of 60 q/ha.

Vinification

Fermentation lasted 8 days in truncated-conical stainless-steel vats at controlled temperatures no higher than 23°C. Maceration continued for another 6 days without punch-downs. Gentle pump-overs kept the cap moist and thoroughly mixed the liquid.

Ageing

Half of the wine matured in stainless steel, while the other half spent 12 months in large French oak barrels. The 2023 was bottled in November 2024.

Technical data

Production of the 2023 vintage was 20,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

This is the estate’s leaner and more immediate expression of Sangiovese, combining accessibility with a clear sense of origin. Its profile remains direct and recognizable, retaining the clarity and tension associated with Poggio Antico while being intended for enjoyment in its youth.

Vintage notes

The winter preceding the 2023 season was dry and mild, slightly delaying budbreak. Dry weather continued through April, followed by heavy rainfall from May to August that supported excellent fruit set. Mildew pressure was high but was controlled with organic methods. Veraison began in early August, followed by a very hot end to summer. Persistent winds moderated the season’s intense spring rain and summer heat.
