Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on the slope of the Rapitala vineyard at approximately 305–396 m above sea level. Its dark clay soils alternate with tuff and sand, in Sicily’s hot climate.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in mid-September. A three-day cold pre-fermentation maceration is followed by fermentation at 25 °C, extracting aroma and tannins with a smooth, enveloping character. Twenty per cent of the wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation for four months in used, medium-toast oak barrels. The wines are subsequently blended.
Ageing
The final blend matures in barriques for 12 months.
Tasting profile
The wine has depth, fullness and a distinctive, rare elegance, with smooth, enveloping tannins. Its vinification preserves Syrah’s varietal character, structure and power.
Label / history
“Nadir” means “deep, rare, precious” in Arabic. Tenuta Rapitala’s name means “river of Allah” in Arabic. Count Bernard Ugonis della Gatine founded the estate in 1971. The owner rebuilt its cellars and winery after they were almost completely destroyed in the Belice Valley earthquake.
