Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Romitorio di Santedame vineyard at the Santedame estate, near Castellina in Chianti in Siena. Planted at the beginning of the 21st century, the vines stand at 310–455 metres above sea level on poor clay and sandy soils. The local microclimate promotes particularly good ripening.
Grapes
The blend comprises 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino.
Vinification
The grapes are picked at optimal ripeness, with each variety vinified separately. Fermentation lasts about 10 days in stainless-steel tanks at 28 °C, followed by up to 10 days of post-fermentation maceration on the skins and malolactic fermentation. The wine is produced only in selected vintages.
Ageing
The final blend matures for 24 months in large oak casks and rests for a further six months in Ruffino’s cellars after bottling.
Label / history
The label was created in 1990, initially as a Toscana IGT wine. Ruffino revived it in 2018 under the name Romitorio di Santedame after an 11-year absence from the market. Production of the 2016 vintage was limited to 6,500 bottles.
