Vineyard and terroir
The estate lies near Castellina, in the heart of Chianti. Its vineyards occupy surrounding hills at 350–470 m above sea level, on relatively shallow, poor clay and sandy soils. The local microclimate supports good ripening. Most of the vineyards were replanted in the 1980s using a modern planting system.
Vinification
Only the best fruit was selected during harvest. In 2009, Merlot was picked in early September, while the other varieties were harvested through mid-October. Alcoholic fermentation took place for 14 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats at an average of 26 °C, followed by seven days of skin maceration and malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matured for eight months in oak barrels and also spent time in steel tanks. It underwent further ageing in the estate’s cellars after bottling.
Tasting profile
Elegant and aromatic.
Label / history
The label depicts the Virgin Mary and Child with Saint John and Saint Peter. Its image comes from a fresco in a small chapel hidden in the woods of the Santedame estate. Experts date the fresco to the 14th century and associate it with the school of the Florentine artist Domenico Ghirlandaio.
